Tips to stay healthy this flu season

With the arrival of flu season, Brock’s Office of Health, Safety and Wellness is offering tips on how to stay healthy, build the immune system and prevent infection.Influenza, commonly called “the flu,” can spread from infected persons through coughing, sneezing and touching contaminated surfaces. Best practices to help prevent the spread of infectious diseases include regularly washing hands, coughing or sneezing into a tissue or sleeve, staying home when ill, avoiding shaking hands with people and getting the flu shot. Meditation, regular exercise, healthy sleep habits and a diet high in fruits and vegetables can strengthen the immune system.An education video created two years ago by Brock Nursing students stresses the importance of the flu shot. It emphasizes that even healthy people can carry the flu virus and infect others, especially vulnerable groups, such as small children; the elderly; or those who are ill, stressed or undernourished.Flu shots are available at the Campus Pharmacy for students, faculty and staff with valid OHIP cards. Students with a UHIP card can make an appointment with Student Health Services.Vaccinations are also available at walk-in clinics, family doctors’ offices and participating pharmacies. More information on the flu shot, including vaccine safety and precautionary measures, can be found on the Niagara Region’s website.The decision to get the flu shot is an individual choice. The Office of Health, Safety and Wellness recommends that faculty, staff and students consult with a health professional, such as a doctor, pharmacist or public health nurse.
