The Independent’s editor, Alhaji Yoro Jallow was detained on 3 August but was released the same day.”These new arrests, coming soon after the promulgation of a law creating a National Media Commission, are worrying for press freedom in Gambia”, said Reporters Without Borders secretary-general Robert Ménard in a letter to President Yayha Jammeh. “If the facts reported by the journalist were erroneous, the vice-president had every right to demand a retraction from the newspaper, but nothing justifies the journalist’s prolonged detention. We request his immediate and unconditional release”.Darboe was arrested on 2 August by officials of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) – Gambia’s secret service – and is apparently still being detained. Jarrow was also arrested by the NIA but was released after questioning. The arrests followed publication of an article reporting Vice-President Njie Saidy’s remarriage to a retired school teacher, Alpha Khan, a year after her former husband’s death.Persons close to Khan told Agence France-Presse that no marriage had taken place. At the same time, the vice-president apparently did not appreciate the fact that the article recalled that, before his death, her late husband was ordered by a government commission of enquiry to reimburse about one million CFA francs (1,525 Euros) in travel expenses.Previously, NIA officials arrested Congolese reporter Guy-Patrick Massoloka on 19 July. The Sunderland boss has found himself in the firing line after rounding on his players in the wake of a demoralising 3-1 Barclays Premier League defeat at Crystal Palace amid a difficult start to the new season. However, Baresi, who will play alongside his former AC Milan team-mate once again on Wednesday night when they join forces at St James’ Park for Steve Harper’s charity game, is confident Di Canio has the mental strength to turn things around. Baresi told the Journal: “When I was playing, I never thought that he could become a manager. But now it is easier to see why it has worked. “He has shown that he has a strong character, with passion. His objective was never to coach in Italy – it was always to come back to England. “I think that Paolo now has a good chance to be a really big success and I don’t think he will want to miss it. He will do his best to show that he can do it. “When I played with Paolo Di Canio at AC Milan, I felt he was really talented and a very good player. “But he only played with us for a short period. He was a strong and very talented player.” Sunderland, who have collected just a single point from their opening three league fixtures, face Arsenal at the Stadium of Light on Saturday and then travel to bottom-of-the-table West Brom before Liverpool and Manchester United head for Wearside. Former Italy defender Franco Baresi has backed compatriot Paolo Di Canio to make a success of his managerial career. Press Association
James attempted to do it at home on Saturday, but finished with just 18 points on eight of 17 shooting in a 148-124 blowout loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.– Young King –Prior to Tuesday’s game, James took to Instagram to congratulate himself. “The House you are about to be apart of has only 6 seats in it …. Congrats again Young King,” he wrote.James started out as a high school phenom who grew up to play for his hometown Cavaliers’ team, then the villain who left for Florida and eventually to the favourite son who returned home.He was drafted first overall by Cleveland in 2003 and in February 2008 he became the youngest player to score 10,000 points.Five years after James played in his first all-star game in 2005, he made “The Decision” to take his talents to South Beach to play for the Miami Heat. The move paid off with his first NBA title in June 2012, when the Heat beat Oklahoma City in five games. After much success in Miami, James announced on July 2014 he was returning to Cleveland and two years later he delivered a championship, ending the city’s 52-year title drought.James could now make a run at the league’s all-time scoring record — Kareem’s career total of 38,387 points. But before that, there are more milestones to collect. Coming into Tuesday’s game, James led the NBA in field goals made this season (463) and over his career, he has made 10,886 field goals which is 19 away from surpassing Nowitzki (10,904 FGM) for eighth all-time in league history.Share on: WhatsApp Los Angeles, United States | AFP | LeBron James made NBA history on Tuesday, hitting the final shot of the first quarter to become the youngest player ever to reach the 30,000 career regular season point milestone.James, who turned 33 on December 30, surpassed Kobe Bryant as the youngest player to hit the 30,000 figure. Bryant was 34 years and 104 days old when he reached the mark. The Cleveland superstar James did it by nailing a step back jump shot against the San Antonio Spurs with 1.1 seconds remaining in the first for his eighth point of the contest.James finished with 28 points on 10-of-23 shooting from the field in the Cavaliers’ 114-102 loss to San Antonio, boosting his total to 30,021.James came into the game needing just seven to scale the height only six others have achieved so far. He joins Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387 points), Karl Malone (36,928), Bryant (33,643), Michael Jordan (32,292), Wilt Chamberlain (31,419) and Dirk Nowitzki (30,808) on the select list of high scorers.“Congrats #KingJames. Welcome to the club!!!” Nowitzki wrote on Twitter.James opened his scoring night with a drive and a left-handed layup with 7:19 left in the first quarter. He added two more points on a finger roll layup with just over four minutes left. He got to within one point of the mark with 64 seconds to go with his first successful jump shot of the game.“Congratulations to LeBron on reaching 30,000 points – yet another milestone in an extraordinary career that continues to inspire,” said NBA commissioner Adam Silver. There was a very good chance history would be made on Tuesday at the Spurs AT&T Center arena as James came into the game averaging 26.8 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.7 assists per game this season.
“Race is an undeniable and complex element of Vick’s story, both because of his style as well as the rarity of Black QBs in the NFL,” Toure writes in the article. “A decade after he became the first Black QB to be drafted No. 1 overall, about one in five of the league’s passers is African-American, compared with two-thirds of all players. But after his arrest for dogfighting, so many people asked: Would a White football player have gotten nearly two years in prison for what Vick did to dogs?”The story goes on to contrast the treatment Vick received for charges of dogfighting, detail the backlash from media, and imagine what his jail sentence would have been if he were White. The story received numerous comments on its first day posted, with ESPN visitors debating everything from race to the justice system. Toure even opens the article with a controversial beginning:“I see streetball. I don’t just mean that sort of football where you have to count to four-Mississippi before you can rush the quarterback, nearly everything breaks down and it’s all great fun. I also mean street basketball,” he wrote. “Vick’s style reminds me of Allen Iverson—the speed, the court sense, the sharp cuts, the dekes, the swag. In those breathtaking moments when the Eagles QB abandons the pocket and takes off, it feels as if he’s thumbing his nose at the whole regimented, militaristic ethos of the game.”“All of that is why, to me, Vick seems to have a deeply African-American approach to the game,” Toure writes. “I’m not saying that a Black QB who stands in the pocket ain’t playing Black. I’m saying Vick’s style is so badass, so artistic, so fluid, so flamboyant, so relentless—so representative of Black athletic style—that if there were a stat for swagger points, Vick would be the No. 1 quarterback in the league by far.”The story has caused a wide range of emotions on the Internet and been covered with extensive debate on ESPN television shows “Mike and Mike” and “ESPN First Take.”(Reprinted from the Afro American.) (NNPA)—Popular sports giant ESPN drew the ire of fans last week after it ran an online article headlined “What if Michael Vick Were White?” on the front page of its football section. The article, which featured a re-digitalized picture of Vick with a White face, was quickly removed before being reposted Aug. 24. The story was written by Toure, a New York-based writer. Becausepaddle wheelers are not fast boats, the 120-mile trip from the Cape May area toAtlantic Highlands will take 19 hours. Coincidentally, the paddle wheeler then known as the Elizabeth Ferry was built in the sameplace the Schades’ Mariner was constructed: Deltaville, Virginia. Six weeksafter he made his bid, Schade learned he’d become the proud owner of a biggerboat. This article was first published in the May 23-29, 2019 print edition of The Two River Times. Now, thisCinderella of the water ways is being reborn as the Navesink Queen, undergoinga transformation that includes adding bathrooms (they were not needed for shortcrossings), bench seats, picnic tables and other enhancements. “We’re going tofine-tune the furniture,” he said. He won’t say what he paid for the paddle wheeler, but it was far less than the $185,000 and change he thought was the winning bid. As it turned out, Schade said, that number was a bidder ID number, not the bid itself. “You haveto do the Coast Guard inspections. You have to get approvals. Once we get everythingready, we’ll probably do a friends and family cruise, and then later we’ll havean open house celebration cruise and give short boat rides around the river.” “A few of my friends had said, ‘Why don’t you get a paddle wheeler?’ ” Schade recalled. When he happened upon the notice in Boats and Harbors of a paddle wheeler up for auction, he and his wife decided to put in a bid. When he saw the numbers on the bidding site, he assumed he’d been outbid. Then he got the call saying he had won. They’regoing to need a bigger boat. But theMariner’s maximum capacity is 40 people. With the popularity of their cruisebusiness growing every year, the Schades decided the time was right to, well, get a bigger boat. Once itsettles in to its home berth in Atlantic Highlands, work on the interior willcontinue. When all the work is done, the boat will need to pass its U.S. CoastGuard inspection before it can begin taking passengers out on the water. As they’ve done on the Mariner for many years, the Schades will be happy to recommend musicians for clients wanting to charter the paddle wheeler. They’ll also offer live music cruises on the Navesink Queen as they do on the Mariner. The Schades are also hoping to acquire a second liquor license (the Mariner already has one) for the boat to accommodate parties and other special events. Before its sale, the boat was owned by Hampton Roads Transit, making 30-minute ferry trips across the Elizabeth River in Virginia. It was an unglamorous occupation. He put in a call to Hampton Roads Transit to see what kind of shape the boat was in. “Is it running?” he asked. “Well, it was yesterday,” they told him. “It was well-maintained, but not really loved,” Schade said. And best of all, there’s no need to worry about sharks. This Saturday the boat will make the journey from Yank’s Landing down by Cape May, where the Schades have been working on it since last January, to the Atlantic Highlands marina. “It needed lots of paint and cleaning, Schade said. The Schades have been operating their cruise and charter business on the river since 2004, offering sunset cruises, music and dance cruises, mansion tours and fireworks excursions aboard their wooden boat, the Mariner. Their boat is also available for charter for group get-togethers and special celebrations. Their cruises are all about the fun. “We don’t do fishing,” Schade said. The newvessel will have top deck passenger space as well as enclosed passenger spaceon the main deck, which will be heated for fall cruising. The Schades are alsoinstalling a Bluetooth sound system so passengers can play their own party mix. Capt. Dan Schade and his wife Vicky have been operating pleasure cruises here since 2004. The Navesink Queen will soon join their wooden boat, the Mariner on the Shrewsbury and Navesink. Photo courtesy Classic Boat Rides Thecouple named the new paddle wheeler in honor of the Navesink River and also intribute to Vicky’s mother. “My wife is from England, so the queen thing kind ofcame in,” Schade said. TheNavesink Queen can carry 100 people, making it possible for customers to booklarger celebrations on the boat. For Capt. Dan Schade and his wife Vicky, owners of Classic Boat Rides, that legendary line from the movie “Jaws” pretty much sums up why they decided to bid on a paddle wheeler that the captain had seen for sale in Boats and Harbors magazine.
Handel Lamey, a member of the Tornadoes Swim Club, is the new president of the Amateur Swimming Association of Jamaica (ASAJ). Lamey defeated outgoing president Martin Lyn 22 votes to 20 at the recent annual general meeting of the association. A new executive has taken over the reins of the association for the period 2015-2017. Tornadoes club’s head coach, Wendy Lee, defeated vice-president for swimming, Allan-Roy Marsh, 22-14 while Nadav Goren received just votes. The new Secretary is Adrian Lyn, who defeated Lavinia McClure 32-10. Uncontested positions were: vice president for water polo – Lance Rochester; vice president for synchronised swimming – Sharon Smith; treasurer – Florence Williams and assistant secretary/treasurer – Paul Campbell. In expressing his appreciation to the swimming fraternity for depositing the confidence and support in the new ASAJ executive incoming president Lamey said he’s ready to take on the challenge of getting aquatics on the front burner. “I look forward to working with the new team in having the discipline of aquatics receive more attention. The establishment of the foundation of the strategic business plan for the sport is also critical to the development of aquatics in Jamaica going forward, and this has to be a shared objective of all stakeholders. We therefore encourage all stakeholders and members to participate at all levels to ensure that these objectives are met,” Lamey said. The new president noted that one of the primary objectives of his executive will be to ensure that Jamaican swimmers qualify and have an opportunity to participate in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He noted that there are senior swimmers who are close to achieving the qualifying time standards for the 2016 Olympics, and the ASAJ will seek to provide the opportunities for them to participate in the approved qualifying meets based on the window that is still left for qualification.
