Exclusive – Silva’s injury could be a blessing for Man City, claims Murphy

first_imgDanny Murphy believes an injury to David Silva could be a blessing for Manchester City. The Spaniard limped out of City’s League Cup defeat to Newcastle in the opening minutes after suffering a knee injury, and he is now a doubt for Sunday’s crucial Manchester derby. But former Liverpool ace Murhpy feels his absence could actually help Manuel Pellegrini’s side.He said: “I’m a bit worried about their form, and here’s why. [Manuel] Pellgrini has been playing with two up front for most of the season and seems determined to stick with that, but what’s happening in the bigger games against good quality opposition is they’re getting outnumbered in midfield.“They’ve been playing with an ineffective Yaya Toure, who for a number of weeks now has been way off his best. He’s still a talented player, but he’s not playing that well and they’re carrying him, and that’s a problem in a midfield four.“The other problem is David Silva. If he plays wide in a four, defensively you’re lacking, because he doesn’t want to run back and defend. He tries, but it’s a token gesture.“In the bigger games, it’s in this midfield area where they’re so lacking and it is something he [Pellegrini] won’t change.“Coming up, City have got some big games. They’ve got Man United at the weekend, and the next two games in the Champions League, against CSKA Moscow and Roma, are crucial. They are must-win games. And the way Chelsea are playing, the weekend’s game is probably must-win as well.“And I’m going to say, and this is something Man City fans will probably be in uproar about, that Silva’s injury could be a blessing.“He’s a wonderful footballer when played in his best position, but he doesn’t play in that position often enough for Manchester City. When he plays wide in a midfield four I don’t think you get the best out of him. To qualify that, the most goals he’s ever scored in a season for Man City is seven. I’m sorry, but for a player of his quality that’s not good enough. He might get assists and contribute in other ways, but he’s a creative player and he needs to score more.“So what I’m suggesting in the games coming up is why not play three midfielders? So you could play Yaya Toure in front of Fernando and Fernandinho for example, then you can play with the wide men and one striker, which would be Aguero.“That looks more solid. And of course it would be because you’ve got three midfielders instead of a No.10 luxury [player], then two wide men of say Nasri, Milner, Navas, take your pick. I think that could make them much more solid and give them a better foundation in games.”last_img read more
