first_imgThere has been widespread shock and an outpouring of grief in The Rosses following the sudden death of Frankie Pat Gallagher. One of Donegal’s true characters, the Mullaghduff man passed away at Letterkenny General Hospital on Friday aged just 48.The father of two (left in recent picture) battled bravely with a long-term illness which proved too much for him in the end. Frankie Pat was surrounded by family and friends including devoted wife Catherine and his two boys Francis and Ciaran when he passed away.Frankie Pat was known as one of life’s gentle souls with a great wit and an all-round talented sportsman. He played for a number of teams in both soccer and gaelic down through the years. He played with Naomh Mhuire since its inception in 1980 and played well into his 40s. As well as being a fine goalkeeper, he was also played midfield and event centre-half.He played soccer for a number of clubs including Keadue Rovers, Arranmore Utd and Gaoth Dobhair Celtic and perhaps his proudest moment came in the 1980s when he was named Donegal League Player of the Year.He was noted as a fine barman and worked in many bars around West Donegal including Neddys, Duffys and Bonners all around Mullaghduff.Frankie Pat was a huge Celtic fan and was appropriately laid out in his Celtic colours. The huge crowd which gathered for his removal from the mortuary at Letterkenny General Hospital was testament to his popularity. Frankie Pat was a personal friend with some of the staff at Donegaldaily.com and it was with shock and disbelief that we learned of his death. We would like to offer our sincere sympathy to Catherine and the boys and to Frankie’s mother Kathleen Duffy and brothers Jimmy, Denis and Pat.Frankie Pat will be remembered and spoken of fondly for a very long time.May his soul Rest In Peace.
